Spiritcatchers

Midhorror Town

:lightbulb: General information
I created this project with my twin sister Sara in 2022. I drew the characters and monsters on Clip Studio Paint. For the front design of the character and monster cards, and the back design of the event cards, I created them using Adobe Photoshop. I also designed the pattern and the design of the Ghost Guzzlers on Adobe Photoshop. The same goes for the Power Bar. For the logo, my sister and I created it together on Adobe Photoshop. As for the other game elements, such as the explanatory video (creation, animation, editing, video and audio editing, voice recording, etc.), as well as the coding and design of the Ouija board, Sara did all of it.

:gamedie: Ambience and universe
The town had long been deserted due to ghost stories, causing the villagers to flee. Today, young entrepreneurs have decided to invest in the town’s land to rebuild a new life. Nowadays, who still believes in silly ghost stories? This is why the Spiritcatchers, passionate about the paranormal, became interested in it. And this is why YOU, ghost hunters, have come to investigate.

:pushpin: Game objective
In Spiritcatchers, you play as ghost hunters trying to capture the spirits haunting the town. Your goal is to weaken the Shadow Master by capturing supernatural entities before he becomes too powerful. To achieve this, you’ll use a Ouija board to gather clues about the spirits and strategically use your skills to trap them. But beware: if all players end up trapped in the Abyss, or if the Shadow Master reaches the end of his path, you lose the game!

:performingarts: Game Start

  1. Choose a character and take three Lilphants (phantom points) each.
  2. Shuffle the Event card deck.
  3. Distribute the Monster cards evenly among the players.
  4. Place the Abyss in the center of the board, set player tokens on the Start space, and position the Master of Shadows on the gray space.
  5. The player who draws the highest number from the Event cards goes first.

:gear: Technical Aspect

:gamedie: During the game

Draw a card to determine your action. Depending on the result, move forward by the indicated number of spaces or move the Master of Shadows forward.

Types of Spaces
  • Fight a Monster
  • Go to the Abyss

If you land on a Go to the Abyss space, you must move to the center of the board and skip two turns. Afterward, return to the Master of Shadows’ path on the nearest space from where you were before entering the Abyss.

:directhit: Game End

:trophy: Victory: You win if you defeat all spirits. The Master of Shadows will be weakened to the point of surrender. To achieve this, his Power Bar must be completely empty.

:bomb: Defeat:

    • If all players end up in the Abyss, you lose.
    • If the Master of Shadows reaches the End space, you lose.

:videogame: Capturing a Spirit

Capturing monsters won’t be easy! You must use a Ouija board and gather clues to identify the entity. You can use the Monster cards for assistance.

  • Success: Place a green Cartridge Guzzler (small green bead) into your Ghost Guzzler (a vacuum-like bag) if it’s a green monster, or a blue Cartridge Guzzler (small blue bead) if it’s a rarer blue entity. A blue entity grants two green Lilphants or one blue Lilphant.
  • Failure: The Master of Shadows advances one space (unless your character has a special ability related to his movement).

:ghost: Lilphant

Lilphants are used to push back the Master of Shadows or reduce his Power Bar to weaken him. There are three different types depending on the game mode (quick, normal, difficult).

  • Earn Lilphants by exchanging captured monsters. A green spirit grants a green Lilphant, while a blue entity grants a blue Pitifant.
  • Emptying the Ghost Guzzler: You must skip a turn to empty your Ghost Guzzler (unless your character has a special ability related to it).
  • Forgetting to Empty: If you forget to empty your Aval’Tout after capturing a spirit, the Master of Shadows moves forward one space, and the released spirit may become enraged!

:joystick: Game Modes

A special « Ultra-Fast Game » mode focuses only on using the Ouija board to identify spirits with Monster cards.

Other modes:

  1. Quick Game: Use the 20-space Power Bar.
  2. Normal Game: Use the 35-space Power Bar.
  3. For the Most Courageous: Use the 50-space Power Bar and start with only one Pitifant per player.

:laptop: Using the Ouija Board

  1. Open spiritcatchers.html in Firefox and set it to full screen.
  2. Click on each smiley face to reveal information about the spirit. There are four categories: its favorite indulgence, its strongest trait, the location where it is found, a characteristic of its appearance
  3. Listen carefully to what the Ouija board reveals.
  4. When you think you’ve identified the entity, click « Solution » in the top right corner.

:warning: Important: Always say « Goodbye » at the end, or the spirit might become angry!
